Kelty Resource Centre selection criteria

The following 'Criteria for selection' is an excerpt from the Kelty Resource Centre Manual.  This is used by the librarians to decide what resources to purchase for the KRC collection.

3.3       Criteria for selection

The Kelty Resource Centre will select the best available resources within the constraints of the College’s, Faculties’, and Kelty Resource Centre budgets. Resources will be selected using the following criteria:

3.3.1        Selected learning resources will be developed or written by competent authors and producers. An exception to this may occur when, in order to achieve a balanced outlook on a controversial issue, a item may not be by a competent author or producer

3.3.2        Suitability for appropriate age levels: resources will be appropriate for the age, emotional development, ability level, learning styles and social development of the students for whom the resources are selected

3.3.3        Resources will be selected to support and enhance the teaching and learning programs and outcomes identified by the College

3.3.4        Factual resources will meet high standards of quality of content and presentation

3.3.5        Physical format and appearance of resources will be suitable for their intended users and use

3.3.6        Resources will have aesthetic, literary, academic or social value as determined by those responsible in light of the criteria for selection

3.3.7        Resources will be selected which encourage students to become aware of our pluralist and multicultural society

3.3.8        Resources will be selected on their strengths rather than rejected for their weaknesses

3.3.9        Biased or prejudicial resources will be selected to meet specific curriculum needs such as to provide opposing political viewpoint, to recognise propaganda or to balance an argument

3.4.1    Fiction

The Kelty Resource Centre will select and acquire a range of fiction suitable for adolescent and young adult readers that will:

-         Satisfy the criteria for excellence and social significance

-         Represent the range of genre

-         Meet the needs of all students within the College therefore fiction will be selected for students with learning or physical disabilities and students whose second language is English.
